Green on Green

Plant hopper on Teasel

I'm drawn to color.
Bright yellow on tall stems, from within the dark of our woods. And the deep red of bee balm, its feet hugging the bank of our shallow creek, shady and cool, empty of water by late August.
Surrounded by green as I am in our many trees and broad fields, it is color that steals my eye.
While green becomes its backdrop.

Yet, if I look away, pry my sight from the blossoms and brilliance they possess, green on green is quite lovely.
The shapes, the textures rich.
With shadow, the subtle hues infinite.
I am guilty of looking too often past green.

I once tried to count and name the number of shades of green on a hillside. I ran out of descriptors. Nature is infinitely diverse.

Lovely post.

Every one of those photos would look lovely hanging on the wall.

Beautiful greens, beautiful images--Reminds me we need more words for all its various shades! The dark maple leaf against the lighter tones, in particular, is gorgeous. Love it!

I think that most of us tend to "look past green" much of the time. but I recall sitting in a dentist's waiting room (of all places) one day, looking out of the picture window, trying to count the shades of green. Too many. I lost count.

I so agree about number of shades--the shadows that hit a particular spot, too, and change what was one, to many.
I find that when I focus, literally on leaves, their shapes and textures are fun. (ok, maybe not tulips')

Anyone know the last one?
With the alternate large/small serrated?
Whatever it it--I LIKE it!

Good gawd, woman...is there no end to your creativity? This is a stunning post...as usual.

As much as I liked the blue (sky), the orange (woolly bear), and the beautiful purples...the 'green' is at once cool, mysterious, dark, bright, full of texture and soft as silk.

Yes, you are an awsome photographer with an artist's eye; but then, we knew that. Thanks for sharing!

Green, the colour of nature and for that alone one of my favourites. Beautiful collection.

Elegant post !! The first teasel is stunning and the lamb's quarters--a common weed -- is transformed in to a plant of uncommon, mysterious beauty under your lens.

I wonder if the color green has more shades in nature than any other color??

That last plant reminds me of Avens or something close to it -- see p. 136 of the Peterson Wildflower Guide.

Something I miss in Australia is 'green on green'. We find it in parks, but, in nature, the muted green of the gums takes over. Your pictures made me quite envious.

Nina, your green pictures are fabulous! My favorite is the second one (maple leaf).
