Where is "there?" (SWF)

My friend at work just returned from a week’s vacation. Her favorite part of each day away, the evening--when she would go to a point on land, and from “there,” watch the sun set over the ocean.

Evening Sky above farm fields

And even though, living in the country as I do, where buildings are seldom taller than several stories, they collect, one after another, in small dense clusters. Barns and coops and silos--ringing each country home.

Here, I have a place that I go to, too.
Where the land touches the sky, and the trees part beyond an openness, stretching broad and deep.
Standing at the edge looking out, I could be anywhere.
But for that moment, I, too, am “there.”

Where is your “there” place?

Lovely, lovely photo.
My "there" is almost any place overlooking the water. If the water is the ocean, so much the better.

A beautiful place to be. God has given us all beauty, we just have to look around us.

Nice photo and prose. My "there" in the winter time is right here at my desk. Looking just beyond the computer monitor, I can see the sun setting behind the layers of mountains. Of course, this view is not there during the summer when the sun sets further to the west and the trees fill in with foliage. That's when I have to find another "there" there.

Bobbie--I love being near water, too. There is not anything that doesn't look beautiful with a wtery backdrop.

Leedra--I agree, and find it true at every turn.

Appalachian Lady--I think everyone has "there," if they think about it. The place you would run to, to see a glorious sky.
I have more than one, too!

My "there" is Centennial Beach, about a 10-minute drive from home. I used to take my girls there after supper in the summers when they were small and I'd sit on a log and watch them gather stones and shells. I can see Mount Baker in Washington state looming on the horizon, always brilliant white against the blue sky but I've yet to get a good shot of it. On clear days I can see the outline of the city to the north and another community across Boundary Bay to the east. To the south the bay stretches out to the Pacific Ocean. The smell of the salt water and the sound of the gulls gives me a sense of peace that all is right in the world.

I envy you the unbroken sky line.
I sometimes look across my suburban neighborhood at the fading light and wish for a view with no houses. BUT--I don't have that.
So my "there" is anywhere where I can look up, and think "what a wonderful world."
(Yes, that is Louis Armstrong you hear singing in your mind's ear!)

Great looking place. My favourite place is Cape st Francis. It is one of those places one can go to and really refresh the soul. A place of many moods and beauty.

My own "there" is anywhere I can see or sense beauty, whatever that may be.

Lovely post, Nina.

Nice capture. My "there" place changes with every mood. One time it's inside a car parked near a bluff overlooking the ocean, another time it would be walking under those majestic redwoods.

Happy skywatching.

I am glad you were there to show us the beautiful skies and landscape. I think my there place is about 4 hours from where I live in the mountains. I wish I got there more often. I have places at home I like to be but if I had to pick one there spot it would be the NC mountains.

What a gorgeous picture. My place is the wetlands behind the cemetary I go to bird watch. It makes all my stress and worries go away while I am there.

Hi Nina, beautiful evening sky "there". My their would be my back porch, which is where most of my sunset photos are shot. Like most everyone else, I just wish I was "there" more often.

What a gorgeous blog. I love your photos and your words! Glad I found you thru Julie Zickafoose's blog. I am an inveterate nature watcher in Colorado, and love seeing another loved landscape.

I think I like your "There" spot better than mine. Lovely shot!

Here and there ... both are relative. "There" is where I was, "here" is where I am now.

My "there" was Whidbey Island, a much better place to sky watch than my "here", Seattle suburbs.

Last night as I was driving home from the cabin, I watched the sun setting from the road's horizon. It was a giant flaming orange ball and it turned the sky all colors of pink and purple and faded to blue at the furthest edges of the sky! It was great!

Beautiful Skywatch photo, Nina! And I love your comments. We all need a "there" place, and I think in my lifetime I have had so many because we have moved around so much. But, nothing thrills me more than a mountain landscape. That's the "there" I most want to be!

Oh my goodness~ I discovered your journal this morning and have completely fallen in love with it. You have an amazing eye and are so blessed to be surrounded by so much beauty.

My "there" place is in a wood behind my house. It's a completely different world than the one just outside the trees. So good to have found you!

Scienceguy--today?? Always!!
This whole post came about because I often experience something that I can only describe as a "connectedness" when I look out at sky features. The moon, constellations,...and today a sunset--because although I may be viewing it from one place, and you another, we are in that moment both watching the same. Places and distances apart seem less important when we look outward toward the same celestial event.
Don't you think?

Kristina--Thanks for stopping by! I'm always glad to know my words and/or pictures have meaning that go beyond me, to others, as well.

I feel so fortunate to have my very own there. I just walk out my back door, go up a few steps and I am sitting on a ridge. I have my view without houses or people.
Very nice shot.

Oh how fun to answer that question! And such a beautiful photo.

My favorite place around here is about an hour away called TENT ROCKS (New Mexico). I am going to post a slide show of this area when I get a chance, and I did a very rough video of it. But it is absolutely gorgeous desert country with mesas and wild rock formations that are so ancient and hauntingly beautiful. And through the rock is a slot canyon. In places only wide enough for one person.

But I find do many places in Nature that just thrill me to great joy. But Tent Rocks would be one of my favorite places.

Hugs to you and hope you are doing really well. You are a truly wild and free spirit. Thank you for inspiring my own love of the wild.

Such lovely soft colors to your sky and fields! For now, "there" for me is in the desert with the view from my backyard or the canyon rim.
