From my Window, White (SWF)

The Woods Beyond my Window

From my window, I look out over the yard, through the Hawthorn just feet beyond the house, and into the woods sloping gently down to a small creek. Watching, from over the screen of my laptop, and behind glass, the lives drawn to this edge each morning.

Often, they flow past unnoticed.
Into the rusty browns of the fallen oak hickory woods and slender gray stems of the graceful young trees filling the understory, they step into invisibility. Without movement, added to this tapestry—
in the softened tones and textures of a woven winter wood.

Until I wake on a snowy morning like this,
and find the darkness brighter.
The Hawthorn filled with forms,
plumped and fluffed against a white cold.

American Golfinch, Carduelis tristis

You have the most lovely way with words, Nina!! I just fall into them and want to stay wrapped up in them. Envy---green with envy---my Mom always told me to never envy another person---but oh my, I would give anything to be able to express myself as you do! I thoroughly enjoy your blog (that statement truly does not express the sheer joy and delight that I find here with you.)

It is such a cold day Nina. The poor birds aren't even exposing their legs any more than they have to. I hope this horrid arctic air passes through quickly. I feel so sorry for the wildlife out in it.

First - I love your snowflake suncatcher.

These are wonderful photos - as yours always are. and, as Angie said, you have a lovely way with words. Beautiful post.

The birds never seem to mind the cold. They find joy all the time. Perhaps that is why I especially love chickadees.

Plumped--perfect word.
Yes they do--plump up and look snuggly even if they aren't.
Keep feeding them so they have fuel to ward off the cold.

I always look forward to your posts - this was very appealing with the observation of the cold weather comings and goings. I am also fond of the word "understory."
It's one that's not used often, but it's so evocative, to me at least. And I very much enjoyed the link to the archived post about the deer. That was before I had discovered your blog, so hadn't read it before. Wonderful wonderful!

Our finches are brightening up as well. Great birding shots but I truly like the art hanging in your window.

Goldfinches look much more like their European cousins in winter plumage. I don't think I've seen that large a flock around here.

Beautiful words. And lovely first image. And I'm enjoying the American goldfinches - make me think of a cross between our (European) goldfinch and (European) greenfinches. They're all pretty close to each other I guess.

Great photos. I did not know you could buy a thermometer that reads below 0. We had the -0 too. In Missouri.
