Have you seen
the dried grasses in that field,
whose heavy heads nod
with the last plump seed
along an arched, brown cane?
Little fish on a pole,
spinning,
dangling,
spangle grass.
"Have you seen...." is an effort to discover the unusual beauty in things not usually appreciated for their beauty.

beautiful !
Indeed, I have not—or if I have, I failed to notice. Nor do I ever recall hearing the name. Is this a wild or garden grass?
"Little fish on a pole, spinning, dangling…" I like that very, very much! Lovely words and photos.
Grizzled scribe--It's growing wild, a native, I believe, also known as Indian Wood Oats, and is related to Sea oats. There's more specifics here.
Sweet, Nina. It does look like a little fish.
Nina- This is a native Ohio species, but it is definitely a southerner, found mostly in the counties bordering the Ohio River. I've seen it at Shawnee.
Tom
Tom--These were actually on the Aullwood Audubon property outside of Dayton. I'm not sure if they'd been planted there, or naturally grew in the fields--they were lovely, all dangling in the sun!
I thought I had...until you said "related to sea oats" and "native to so. Ohio..."
I 've seen this as sea oats when we go on our annual vacation to Oak Island, NC... (NOT part of the outer banks, thank you!)
Beautiful... I love their simple symmetry....
What a lovely little plant - and your notes and full of verbal pictures as well - fish on a pole, spangled grass!
I love grasses and weeds in photos, especially against the sky. Wonderful captures!
Lovely series.
Beautiful pictures and words. :)
Simply beautiful - love the analogies. Nicely captured, and beautifully shared.
Lovely photo series. :)
As always lovely pictures and prose. I love how you used the plants to hightlight the sky.
I love grasses too and have some in my shot today. I've never seen this type though; it's so pretty. Really lovely shots, enjoyed them very much.
that spangled grass is very pretty!
Wonderful post!
I like this photo of this grass. I wonder how it would work near Brookville where I live?
Wonderful photo and yes Ive seen it here in SE KS!
Now I have. Thanks for sharing.
'Have you seen....'~ great idea.
And I have, and thought it was beautiful.
I like the idea of stopping to appreciate the beauty we take for granted.
Beautiful Sky Watch-post!
I've always found this grass to be just beautiful, which you have confirmed with your wonderful photos.
Beautiful pictures.
I love them.
...I've seen them and thought about their beauty, but never took the time to let it steep in my mind. I really liked your description and poem. When you put it into words, the beauty goes on. Thank you!
Beautiful photos-and I love your descriptions as well.
I've never had any idea what that was called. Now I Know - spangle grass!

You always manage to show us the simple things in such ways that they always look like art!
What a great idea-I love your "Have you seen..." collection! It's so easy to find the beauty in little things like these and also so easy to overlook it.
This is a poetical and great post!
I love your blog and your posts and your whole attitude. I think you're great... but this "Have you seen..." concept is AWESOME! I love the whole idea and purpose of it! Is this something someone else can join with you? or just something you do on your own? I'm going to go see if I can find out about this wonderful idea you have come up with!
