Special Delivery (SWF)

Pine Warbler, Dendroica pinus, male

I wished for blue skies and sunshine.
Today, it arrived in a small, winged package.
Not everyone was as thrilled as I.

The Titmouse does look a little annoyed...I'm still trying to spot Bluebirds here, but I would settle for a Pine Warbler!

I am always surprised to see warblers, with their thin bills so adapted to catching and eating insects, lunching at a feeding station that has the favorite foods of the thick-billed , seed eaters like sparrows.
Birds are such adaptable creatures, aren't they ?

That is the most charming interaction you caught! Love this!!

I must agree with Deborah - charming interaction of those little birdies! Nice, clear pics.

LOL!! I have never seen a tufted titmouse behave that way. So cute! I love the one where it's beak is open and you can tell it is highly annoyed at the warblers existence on the feeder!

...oh I love that little titmouse's reaction...and the Pine Warbler's nonchalance...classic!

Ooh, I'm glad you've got a Pine Warbler! I haven't seen any at my feeders yet, but one arrived around this same time last year. BTW, looks like Julie's petulant Titmouse come over to your house!

That titmouse must be feeling...insecure...in front of all that yellow.

Has the Pine been there all winter? Or an early migrant?

This is the first time a pine warbler has appeared at my feeder, ever! And although my initial reaction was shock at an early migrant, I've read they are hardy enough to overwinter, especially at the extremes of their range (I'm in SW Ohio). So, he may have been here, feeding in the pines way out back, all along.
In reading more, I found they are the only seed-eating warbler, and are fairly common visitors to birdfeeders for seed. I was just delighted to have such a ball of sunshine flitting about the yard--he's gorgeous.

Funny!! At a first/quick glance, it could be a goldfinch?! (I'll want to be sure I'm paying close atttention!!)

(From previous post.... Yes, could be a wren...not sure, I did not see what bird was scaring the bluebirds away, and by the time I got to the box from indoors, it had already flown away.... We DO have a pair of Carolina wrens who have taken to hiding overnight in our garage....not sure if I shared that fact here before.... So should I maybe watch and NOT shoo away a more "desireable" bird if the bluebirds don't prevail?? I know swallows have nested before ...not sure if any other species...)

Giggles--sometimes, nesting boxes are placed in pairs, close to eachother, so if one is occupied, another is available for the bluebirds. Maybe adding a box would allow for both?

Dear Nina,
Such a pretty bird....oh!
I would have also been excited. I have very few Warblers in my area. Tufted does seem confused. I like to think she was greeting the Warbler.
I enjoyed these photographs very much.
Thank you,
Sherry

Warbler 1, Titmouse 0. Great photo, but even better, warblers are a sure sign that spring is approaching.
