These are wonderful! Since I am still in the nursery school of birdwatching, photos such as these help me study the colors, shapes and details more carefully. Looking at them now, they seem like little bundles of miracles.
Monarch--I'm always jealous of your brrrrds, Tom. Had to break the excitement of all the rocks I've been stalking!
Cestoady--I was filling feeders all day to keep these pretty little fluffballs perching right outside the window.
Caroline--I didn't post my favorite, a silhouette of a form--low, with little feet, sitting still at the end of a fine branch. It wasn't perfectly in focus or showing color, but it was the essence of a winter bird.
Lynne--I LOVE that little goldfinch, too--keeping his feet warm under the down blanket.
Jennifer--The perfect antidote to winter's brown/gray landscapes!
Mary--YES, this is the ONLY decent chickadee photo and all the other titmice ones look like blobs, hammering seeds between their toes! Finches are much more cooperative. And, yes, brrrrrr!
Pineyflatwoodsgirl--I know you're waiting for owl pellets...stay tuned! :-)
Susan--the owl was in a tree right beside the drive, a little beyond the little hut as we were leaving. It sat for about 5 minutes staring back at us in the car, then flew low over the road into the woods...full moon rising. So cool!
Hi Nina, I came across your site through bloggyaward, and I must say that i do love it :) very soft and neat with interesting content. Btw I love the pictures you have here... are you part photographer? :)
I enjoyed your beautiful birds. It is always a delight to see the birds being well feed. I have not seen the Titmouse around my gardens for over a month. It must have become too cold, -2 is too cold for me! Wonderful photos. Sherry

The Adventures of Red Canoe
Come along in Red Canoe as she explores the quiet backwater of Ohio's State Parks and the scenic streams and rivers of the Midwest. Discover the beauty hidden beyond the water's edge, quietly waiting, past access points, often only inches deep!
Grabbing every minute I can find to be outside--walking in it, sleeping in it ... breathing it in. The natural world has so much beauty to uncover.
It is my hope that by capturing my experiences with nature and by sharing the richness it adds to an ordinary life, others may discover the greatest gift waiting just outside their door.
In Spring of 2008, I began the study of 2 vernal pools on my property as part of theOhio Vernal Pool Partnershipmonitoring program.My2008 journalincludes the first photos and findings, as I studied this fascinating wetland area just a few steps beyond my backdoor...
2009 photos and findings,2010,... again! Now, 4 years later, another season is just days away!

The Sweetness of Spring
Each spring, as winter lessens its grip and days warm with the first fragrant breezes of a new season, we collect sap from our Sugar Maples and produce just enough syrup for ourselves for the coming year. The progress of this year's backyard endeavor is illustrated here.
A Bird's Life
Summer 2008, the tiny jewel of the avian world, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, nested just feet from my front door. Pictures of her nest and the changing lives within are collected in thisjournal. From life the size of a pea....

That first little fluffed out goldfinch has such a pear body!
Very colorful post, this!
Ooooo, I'm green with envy. Your photos of my favorite birds are wonderful. Did you have trouble with the Titmouse? I do, all the time.
It's very cold here, too. Below freezing. I can't help but feel sympathetic to the birds.
Great photos! Really good!!!!
I love the little lumpy goldfinch pyramid.
(And don't pout, Nina. My barred owl was pure luck. I heard that the BO at the CNC was hanging around the parking lot. Is that where you saw it?)
Stacie--it's brrrr--but bright sunshine! Luckily, I'm behind glass!
