Jewels

The weatherman's forecast is written in bold, sizzling red letters--HOT.
I'm thankful that the woods have grown dense.
Within, they are still and cool.

We glide quietly upon water.
Far beyond the sunny beaches and the boaters.
Past thickets of horsetails.
Until the vines grow everywhere and it looks as if we should stop.

It is there, in the stillness of a shady bank, they rest.
Ebony jewelwings--bright bodies below black.
Cool and lovely.

I saw my first ebony jewelwing this last weekend. I thinks it is the prettiest insect I've ever seen.

What a lovely place to hang out on a hot summer day.

The woods keep me sane when it gets crazy hot. Your woods look really, really nice!

I am sweating just thinking about hiking through the woods. Ha...

The lotus here are about to burst into bloom. I love to see a pond near here virtually covered with these blooms, then the pods.

The jewelwing is lovely, and the lake photo makes me want to sink into its coolness.

I love Jewelwings and the lazy way they fly through the air.

I've seen lots of those jewelwings near creeks here in PA--my question is, are they all ebony jewelwings? I've seen a few that have a bluish color to them in certain light and at certain angles, while others look more greenish. Are they just all the same kind of insect? Thanks!

Delia--
I believe they are the same species, just different colors. I've seen them in shade of metallic blues and greens.
Females have a conspicuous white spot on the wing.

I want to be there. I've never seen an Ebony Jewelring. I'd love to feel the cool...in the shade with you.

Beautiful post, Nina. You continue to delight all of us with your wonderful self.

Oh, it's hot here as well. But I feel much better after smoothly sliding through the water and lily pads. Lovely jewelwings. Glad you showed us the place.
