Fall Colors All Around

The last week has given us spectacular skies--
clouds that linger for the afternoon,
and part just as a red sun begins to set.
Rayleigh scattering, the explanation for the colors in blue skies and red sunsets, from small particles within the atmosphere that reflect light, perhaps even more apparent in this time of drought.

A hint of color, late in the day.

With each step closer to the horizon, a deeper shade.

Until, against a dark blue sky, broad orange reflection--
the backdrop to rich purple clouds.

A reminder that from adversity comes beauty.
And unpredictably happy endings.

See more Skywatch here.

A volcano in Alaska has given us these beautiful sunsets. Thanks for sharing, here in Maine, I haven't seen the sunset in a week.

At least there is somethin beautiful about a drought, the dust in the atmosphere enhances the colours of the sunsets.
We're in our 5th. year and have to sell off most of our stock, we'll keep a small stock herd of cattle and some of our rare breed sheep. Buying feed in a drought is not a viable proposition. Have a happy week-end.

You know--the most beautiful sunsets I have seen in my life were in the West. They just don't make them that glorious on the East coast. I don't know why. Once when we were leaving the Denver Natural History Museum, we looked up and saw the ENTIRE sky roiling in black and red. It was the most amazing sunset I have EVER seen....we did get pictures, but they are slides, and alas, I haven't been able to locate my older slides....when I do, though!!!! Heh, heh!

Thanks for posting these wonderful pictures! I really enjoyed them!

Wow! Incredible series of photos. Very beautiful.

This is my favorite time of year for sunsets (and sunrises). The colors seem to have deepened from the lighter tones of summer.
